How can releasing nuclear waste from the Fukushima power plant into the ocean be harmful?

It seems more than likely, that the Fukushima plant in Japan will soon have to spill nuclear radioactive water into the pacific ocean. What are some serious problems with doing that? What other options are there? Also, whats wrong with putting the nuclear waste sludge into barrels, and trowing them in the ocean? That seems to be the current plan.
